Monument in Colón Cemetery

Mario Memorial

This monument at Colón Cemetery, co-designed by Mario Coyula, honors forty university students from the FEU-Directorio Revolucionario (Revolutionary Directorate) who were killed after an assault on the Presidential Palace on March 13, 1957. Their assassination attempt on Batista failed – the President was in his private quarters, not his office – and provoked brutal reprisals.
